This book is perhaps one of the most valuable additions to my proverbial "five-foot bookshelf" of field guides (trust me, it's much longer than five feet!). I was so impressed by it that I purchased a second copy for a friend who often goes with me in the field to search for rare species. The terms are clearly defined and best of all, illustrated in such a manner that makes the meanings quite plain. I would recommend it to anyone from intermediate amateur to professional. After all, we do tend to forget those terms we only use occasionally. Without the slightest hesitation, I give this book a full five stars. If I could make them xanthous, I would.
I am a graduate student and I spend a lot of time in the herbarium identifying plants using dichotomous keys. I use this terminology book whenever I am keying plants. It has been an invaluable resource to me. I used it on at least 10 different occasions during my plant ID session just today actually. So yeah, this book is very helpful for anyone who needs to understand the terminology associated with plant descriptions and characteristics. For example: If you have ever wondered how to describe the different types of hairs you see on plants when you look at them with a hand lens or with a dissecting microscope this book provides the definitions and illustrations of the many different kinds of hairs and other surface textures that you might see on plants (Laypeople/non-plant people have probably never seen so many different ways to describe "hairy".)
This has been a very helpful resource in my Landscape Plant identification course. It has allowed me to study plants in more detail. It also helps me with spelling out technical terms, which is great. There are a number of illustrations that help explain different terms. It was a little confusing to use at first and wasn't exactly what I expected, but I love it now.The best way to describe this book is as a plant term dictionary.
Fantastic resource for anyone new or even intermediate level botany experience. Great resource to use with more technical manuals. I use it regularly with Flora of Virginia to wade through the technicalities and keys. I am new to botany and I could not get by without this resource. Almost everything is shown in picture/diagram along with definitions.
I started studying botany a few years ago and there is so much terminology! This book is handy when I am using different guides that choose words I don't use much or at all, and help me get my plants identifed accurately with fewer guesses about fine details! I love the illustrations too; very clear.
This book is exactly what you want it to be; Complete: Every single identification term I came across in Hitchcock's Flora guide was in this book, and for those who don't know that's a LOT. Clear: Easy to understand language is often accompanied by nice clear illustrations. Size/Shape: Well, it's a square book that is probably 12"x12" and 1cm thick. It is not too heavy, but on that note it is bound like any other run-of-the-mill "non-field" style books; don't expect it to stand up to heavy abuse.Bottom line: If you need a book of this type, feel confident getting this one. There could be ones out there that are equally as good, but if I ever need to replace this copy I won't bother shopping around.

Fantastic book! This book will be of great help in trying to identify plants using keys. Most of the keys will have a glossary of the technical terms used in describing a plant, but there are seldom any pictures to really show what the terms mean and how they really appear. Often several forms of the same structure or description are listed when different forms of the same word are used by different authors. The vocabulary associated with the identification of plants from family through species can be very confusing, and this book goes far to explain the technical words. Some knowledge of botany is needed and many of the terms require a hand lens or dissecting microscope to be able to see the structures. It's certainly the best book of its kind that I have found.
